The thing that surprises people about Ballagan Farm is how little driving the walking involves. Ballagan Farm sits inside Loch Lomond and The Trossachs, Scotland's first National Park, rather than on the edge of it, so the good stuff starts more or less at the gate.
Straight from the door: the farm walks
There are farm walks straight from the door of both the Rose Pod and the Thistle Pod, which means there's no need to get back in the car before the first walk of the stay. They're dog friendly, and there's only one rule: Ballagan Farm still runs sheep and cattle in the fields around the pods, so keep dogs on a lead and under control anywhere near the grazing land.
On foot: the West Highland Way
The West Highland Way runs right past the farm. You can walk a section and turn back whenever suits, or keep going — it runs all the way north. It's the easiest way to get a proper long-distance-path walk into a weekend without any logistics at all.
Seven minutes: The Dumpling, and the RSPB reserve
Duncryne Hill near Gartocharn, known locally as The Dumpling, is a short climb with an outsized view for the effort — the best return on a walk anywhere near here. RSPB Loch Lomond is the flat alternative: dog-friendly trails, herons and swans, free parking and somewhere to sit. Both are about seven minutes' drive.
Under the trees: Whinny Hill Wood
Whinny Hill Wood, a Woodland Trust Scotland site, is the one to save for a day when the tops are in cloud and a hill would just be a walk inside a rain shower. Woodland instead of a view, and a gate at the end of a quiet road.
Twenty to forty-five minutes: the bigger days
- Conic Hill above Balmaha, twenty minutes away, for the classic panorama down the length of the loch — worth building a Saturday around
- Luss village, twenty-five minutes, with conservation cottages, a pebble beach and a pier café at the end of the walk
- Ben Lomond, forty-five minutes' drive, the most southerly Munro and a full day out rather than an afternoon
Whatever you get up to, the hot tub is up to temperature when you get back, and towels and robes are already in the pod. Pack boots — the rest of the list is short — and if you've booked the BBQ hut, dinner is sorted too.
